EMMERDALE’S ROXANNE REVEALS SHE WAS ABUSED

Roxanne Pallett has revealed for the first time how she used to be in an abusive relationship on today’s This morning.

The soap star told presenters Fern and Phillip how her mother helped her get out of it.

‘I personally have witnessed it in a relationship a long time ago, where jealousy and insecurity on one person’s part can elevate from how you see with Andy and Jo, an argument.  It can be the slightest thing that ticks one person off and it elevates and erupts,’ said Roxanne on the ITV show.

The actress’ abusive relationship mirrors her current storyline in Emmerdale and Roxanne said it was ‘devastating’ filming the storyline for the soap.

‘Yeah, a long time ago and that’s why I feel very passionate about this cause because I think that if people are in a relationship that is volatile… I mean everyone has arguments but when it borders on the point where you’re isolated from your family and friends, you’re having to double check with them if it’s ok, you’re decisions aren’t your own,’ adds Roxanne.

Roxanne says she wants to help other young women speak out.

 ‘You can spend the rest of your life being treated like this.  I think everyone knows deep down that it’s not right but it’s gaining that strength to speak up.  Sometimes people don’t have anyone else or anywhere else to go.  And they feel like ‘If I leave then what have I got?,’ says the star. 

‘But anything’s got to be better then suffering like this because you loose every grain of your confidence, you loose your identity.  You’re at the hands of someone that’s stripping you away from who you are and your friends and your independence and you can’t live like that. Especially when there’s children involved, you just can’t carry one. 

‘You just have to tell one person.  A friend found out and she was my rock.  And then my Mum found out and it was only then that I thought, ‘This is it now I’m at a crossroads in my life where I can either continue in this spiral or I can get out’.  And I’m a strong character and I’m confident and I’m quite assertive and if it can happen to me and it can happen to a character like Jo, it can happen to anyone.  It happens to everyone in all shapes and sizes.  It doesn’t just happen to timid women in the corner.’
